You Don’t Need a Reason: A Playful Couples Session at Home in Maine

You Don’t Need an Anniversary to Have Couples Photos Taken

There is something incredibly special about photographing two people who have built a life together and can still look at each other like they're just getting started.

I have photographed Nick and Meghan with their three children a couple times, and ever time, their connection stood out to me. In the middle of all that wonderful family chaos, there were these little glances between them. The touches. The laughter. The unmistakable feeling that these two genuinely, deeply enjoy one another.

So when I had the opportunity to photograph just Nick and Meghan at their home this summer, I knew I wanted this session to feel like them.

No elaborate setup. No need to make their relationship look like something it isn't.

Just two people who love each other, playing, laughing, flirting and giving themselves permission to focus on each other for a while.

Well, mostly just the two of them.

Their oldest, Lilly, had a very important job at the beginning of our session: controlling the garden hose.

When You Can't Wait for Rain, Make Your Own

We wanted rain.

Maine summer weather had other plans.

So we made our own.

With Lilly manning the garden hose, Nick and Meghan stepped into their own little summer rainstorm right in their yard.

And it was perfect.

Wet hair. Water running down their faces. Clothes clinging to them. Foreheads together. Hands pulling each other closer.

There were moments that were romantic and intimate and others that were downright steamy.

But what I love most about these photographs isn't simply the chemistry between them. It's how much trust you can see.

There is an ease between Nick and Meghan that comes from knowing another person deeply.

They move together.

They lean into one another instinctively.

There are moments when the way they look at each other says far more than anything I could have asked them to manufacture for a photograph.

That's exactly what I want from a couples photography session.

I don't want to manufacture connection.

I want to give you enough space to actually experience it.

From Romance to a Game of Tag

Of course, Nick and Meghan aren't only romantic.

They're ridiculous together, too.

And I mean that as one of the highest compliments I can give a couple.

They laughed. They chased each other. They played tag. They teased each other.

The session shifted naturally from quiet intimacy into the kind of laughter that comes from being completely comfortable with another person.

That best-friend energy is such an important part of their relationship.

Romance doesn't always have to look serious or cinematic.

Sometimes love looks like someone chasing you across your own yard.

Sometimes it looks like laughing so hard you forget I'm standing there with a camera.

Sometimes it looks like knowing exactly how to make your partner crack.

And sometimes...

it looks like jumping into the pool fully dressed.

Yes, They Actually Jumped Into the Pool

There are moments during sessions when I know we have crossed the line from "taking pictures" into actually making a memory.

This was one of them.

Nick and Meghan jumped into their pool with their clothes still on, because why wouldn't they?

It was spontaneous, playful and completely them.

And that's the part I wish more couples understood about having photographs taken together.

Your session doesn't have to be a performance.

You don't have to know how to pose.

You don't need coordinated outfits, an elaborate location or a Pinterest board filled with photographs you want to recreate.

You need each other.

I'll take care of the rest.

Couples Photos Aren't Only for Engagements

Somewhere along the way, we started treating professional couples photography as something reserved for the beginning of a relationship.

We photograph engagements.

We photograph weddings.

And then, for a lot of couples, the photographs become about the children.

Family photos.

School pictures.

Birthdays.

Vacations.

Christmas cards.

And slowly, the two people who started the whole thing stop being photographed together unless someone happens to grab a phone.

I think your relationship deserves to exist in photographs, too.

Not only the version of you who stood together on your wedding day.

The version of you that exists now.

The one that has weathered things together.

Built a home together.

Raised children together.

Changed together.

The one that knows exactly how the other takes their coffee and what will make them laugh when they've had a terrible day.

The version that has history.

There is something extraordinarily beautiful about that kind of love.

Your Relationship Is Worth Remembering, Too

You don't need an anniversary to book a couples session.

You don't need to be engaged.

You don't need an announcement.

You don't need a reason other than:

I love this person, and I want to remember what loving them felt like during this part of our lives.

Maybe your session happens at home, where so much of your story actually lives.

Maybe we go somewhere beautiful along the Maine coast.

Maybe we hike somewhere, wander through downtown Bangor, run through the rain, cook together, drink something on your porch, get in the water or do something completely ridiculous that makes perfect sense to the two of you.

The location matters far less to me than the connection.

Because twenty years from now, I don't just want you to remember what you looked like.

I want you to look at these photographs and remember how you loved each other.

Nick and Meghan gave me exactly that.

The attraction.

The partnership.

The friendship.

The quiet looks.

The big laughs.

The playfulness.

The kind of love that has grown into a whole life together without losing the spark that started it.

And I can't think of anything more worthy of being photographed.
